Michigan sunsets are some of the best around…and can be some of the best kept secrets around for those who may not frequent the outdoors or peer out their window during that time. Inspired by the beauty that comes out just before the night takes over, I took some photographs of my favorite places at sunset. No Photoshop. No touch ups. Just pure Michigan sunsets for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
Sunsets Around Ann Arbor
I used to pass the U of M Dental School in Ann Arbor on the way home from work and indulged in this view of State Street. I find that linear perspectives and sunsets seem to be a pleasant mix. The town’s architecture fosters such sights, as they often result in sunset colors appearing progressively more intense, then colluding together, almost as if they’re watercolors bleeding together.
Ann Arbor sunsets…I am often treated to ones on the way home from places in the evenings, but don’t always have my camera; fortunately for this serene sunset, I did! I took this photo as I stood in front of the State Theater, looking past the Michigan Theater, toward First Street.
Sunset in St. Joseph
This photo is of one of the well-known, dazzling sunsets in St. Joseph. All sunset enthusiasts must visit this bubbly beach town off of Lake Michigan or they’re missing out! Easily, this sunset could’ve passed for a tropical one, if only the tree silhouette were that of a palm tree. The colors are of equal, if not more, magnificence. Mark my words, that hot pink explosion is not the result of any Photoshop contrast adjustment.
Sunsets in Detroit
This is the first of two featured photos of the almost incomprehensibly angelic sunset I held the privilege of viewing the night I saw Sir Paul McCartney at Comerica Park in July 2011. The most important and magical ingredient of this sunset was the storm cloud passing over the stadium shortly before the show. Looking at this photo, I remember how excited I was, yet just a little nervous I was that the show might get rained out. Keep in mind, I was unknowingly awaiting this performance since I was a toddler, listening to the Beatles on WOMC in the car with my parents. It all worked out beautifully in the end though – literally and figuratively.
I shot this the night I saw Sir Paul McCartney perform at Comerica Park in July 2011. On this evening, the infamous sight of Ford Field sprouting up on its left-hand shoulder was peppered with a glorious sunset peeping through receding storm clouds. It almost appears as if the yellow sunset stream ushers the crisp and more friendly blue sky that follows.
